Legium

Privacy

We don’t want your data, and we have nowhere to put it. Legium has no server, no accounts, no analytics and no advertising. Nothing you keep in the app is sent to us.

Your library is yours. It is on your iPhone or iPad. It is in your own iCloud account if you use iCloud. Whether a copy goes anywhere else is your decision each time.

What stays on your device

Everything you put into Legium: passages, notes, photographs of pages, sources, tags and settings.

The work is done on the device too. Reading the text in a photograph, searching by word and searching by meaning all run on your iPhone or iPad. No passage and no photograph is sent anywhere to be processed.

  • Camera. Legium asks for the camera when you photograph a page. The picture goes into your library.
  • Photos. When you choose a picture from your photo library, Legium receives only the pictures you pick.
  • Sharing into Legium. When you share a page or a selection from another app, Legium receives what you shared and saves it to your library.

iCloud is yours, and your choice

Sync. If your device is signed in to iCloud and iCloud is turned on for Legium, your library is kept the same on your devices through your iCloud account. It is stored in the private part of that account, which Apple runs and only you can open. We cannot read it.

Three settings travel the same way, because they belong to the library and not to the device: your own kinds of source, your colour tags, and the library’s name. The theme and the search settings stay on each device.

You turn this on and off in iOS Settings → your name → iCloud. Turning it off takes the library off that device until you turn it on again; the copy in iCloud stays. Export your library first if you want a file of your own.

Apple shows us technical records of sync requests for the app: how many there were, what kind, and whether they failed. They hold nothing from your library and do not name you.

Backups. If you back up your device to iCloud or to a computer, your Legium library is included, as any app’s data is. We cannot see a backup.

Copies you make

  • Exports. Settings → Export everything… writes your whole library to one file. You choose where it goes. Legium uploads nothing.
  • Sharing a passage. Share hands a passage to the app you pick. Copy puts it on the clipboard, which iOS may hand to your other devices if Universal Clipboard is on.

Diagnostics

Legium can describe a fault, and only you can send the description. The app has no way to send anything to us.

  • Copy diagnostics puts on the clipboard your device’s model, its iOS version, the build of Legium, how many passages the search index holds, and how search by meaning is running. It includes no passage text.
  • Copy what was read puts the text Legium read from one photograph on the clipboard. It appears only after you turn on Show diagnostics in Settings → About Legium.

Either one reaches us only if you paste it into a message and send it.

What Apple sends us

  • Crash reports. If you have turned on Share With App Developers in iOS Settings, Apple sends us crash reports. They say where the code failed, on which device model and iOS version. They hold nothing from your library.
  • Test builds. If you try a pre-release build through TestFlight, Apple passes us its crash reports and any feedback you choose to send, with any screenshot you attach. If we invited you by email, we have that address.

What Legium asks Apple for

Legium may ask iOS to download Apple’s word-form data for English, which improves search. The request names a language and carries none of your text.

Buying Legium

You buy Legium from Apple’s App Store. Apple takes the payment and does not tell us who you are. We see sales totals by country.

Writing to us

If you write to , we receive your address and what you wrote. We use them to answer you, and delete them when you ask.
